A white bike has been tied to a fence close to where a Carlisle cyclist lost his life.

The bike - which is a fitting tribute to Colin Rae - has been tied to
a fence on Brampton Road, opposite the University of Cumbria.

Two bouquets of flowers also adorn the fence.

Mr Rae, 83, of Whiteclosegate, off Brampton Road, was killed in October when his bike was in collision with a lorry.

Friends described the Carlisle pensioner as a "popular, quiet and gentle man."

He was a founder member of the Carlisle Cycling Campaign - now Cycling Carlisle - and was the group's first chairman in 1992.

It is not yet known who has placed the bike there in his memory.

Mr Rae, who had had two hip replacements, was fiercely independent and was often seen riding his bike around the city.

He was keen on environmental issues and loved cycling.

A statement from Cumbria Police at the time of his death said: "He
cycled everywhere, not just to get from A to B but for pleasure too, and
to help the environment. He was exceptionally fit - as healthy as
someone 21 years his junior."

Mr Rae was the youngest of three brothers and is survived by an elder brother, who lives in Sheffield.

A keen church organ player, Mr Rae was on his way to choir practice
at St. Aidan's Church, on Warwick Road, at the time of the accident.

Richard Oakley, the vicar of St Aidans said: "He will be so greatly missed by me, and the whole congregation.

"Colin came across as a very quiet, solitary man but was popular with all those privileged to know him."

A lorry driver, 61, from Carlisle, has since been arrested on
suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop
after an accident. He has been bailed by police pending further
inquiries.
