Rito Antonio "Anthony" Mungioli, was struck from behind by a young man driving a pickup truck at the intersection of Arapaho Road and Greenville Avenue, Richardson TX, Monday, September 29, 2008.
Mr. Mungioli was 51. Anthony had just started commuting to work by bicycle, 14 miles each way, back in June. He was committed to his work at Central Falls, the Garland company he co-founded in 1989, said his brother, Luigi Mungioli of Dallas. Mr. Mungioli's coaching accomplishments included leading his over-30 men's team to four regional championships and two national titles, his brother said.
Anthony Mungioli was born in Caracas, Venezuela, where his father, Armando Mungioli, was a tailor for five years. The youngest of six siblings, Anthony Mungioli was the first born outside of Italy. In 1959, Mr. Mungioli and his family moved to Dallas.
He also played soccer at Southern Methodist University, where he received bachelor's degrees in history and business administration, his brother said.
Mr. Mungioli played one season with the Houston Summit of the Major Indoor Soccer League before returning to Dallas, where he held several positions with Prophecy Corp., a sportswear manufacturer.
In 1989, he and his brother Luigi co-founded their women's apparel manufacturing company in Garland. Luigi Mungioli was president, while his brother was vice president and treasurer.
The Mungioli name is synonymous with soccer to many in Richardson.
One of his brothers, Richard Mungioli of Richardson, started the soccer program at Pearce High School, which he coached to two state championships.
Anthony Mungioli was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the Italian Club of Dallas.
In addition to his two brothers, Mr. Mungioli is survived by his wife, Karen Mungioli of Dallas; two sons, Anthony Mungioli and John Mungioli, both of Dallas; his mother, Rosaria Mungioli of Richardson; another brother, Gerald Mungioli of Richardson; and two sisters, Antonia Russell of Plano, and Alba Pickering of Richardson.
The ghost bike was removed by the City of Richardson less than two days after it was installed.
