Get involved with the NYC Street Memorial Project!
New York City
Get involved with the NYC Street Memorial Project! For more than 5 years, the NYC Ghost Bike Project, Pedestrian Memorial Project, and Ghostbikes.org have helped New Yorkers remember the lives lost on our streets and foster a culture of mutual respect.
The Street Memorial Project seeks volunteers to help in various ways--and we are looking for new ideas, too. We need people to work on the web site, install memorials, care for existing memorials, contribute art, and organize the Annual Memorial Ride and Walk on the first Sunday in January (the next one is 1/3/10). We need your energy and ideas to keep this project going.
We want to meet you. Please come to either or both of our casual pot lucks:
Sunday 7/19, 5-8pm, Sunset Park, Brooklyn
Thursday 7/23, 7 pm, 140 Metropolitan #1 at Berry, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
For more information, contact Rich at rich.krollman (at) gmail.com or 718.938.9836.

This Sunday, 7/19, we will be joining Rev. Billy Talen, Green Party Candidate for Mayor of New York City, and the Life After Shopping Gospel Choir at the next installment of his weekly BBQ Revival Series.
Each week, Billy and the choir will host a BBQ/picnic in a new park. These gatherings aim to bring together local organizations and groups from all of the fabulous 500 neighborhoods across NYC. There will be performances by Billy and the choir, presentations from associated community groups and time to mingle with a host of new friends. This is your chance to come get involved!
This week's revival is in Sunset Park Brooklyn. This neighborhood's namesake park is set on a hill (the second highest point in Brooklyn) giving visitors some of the best views in all of NYC. We'll be watching the sun set on the harbor and lower Manhattan.
The neighborhood is facing an upcoming re-zoning by the city planning department that could allow for out-of-scale buildings that will block views from the park.
Meeting point:
Enter the park at the 41st St and 5th Ave entrance and walk uphill into the park. We'll be in the center field at the top.
Please bring food and beverages to share!

Ride of Silence
Dallas-Fort Worth
Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph/20 kph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. Rides happen in most major cities; see RideofSilence.org for locations.
This event is not organized by the NYC Street Memorial Project. See RideofSilence.org for local rides and organizer contact information.
The 11th Annual Blessing of the Bikes
New York City
Wear your usual cycle clothing and bring your bike (or skates or non-motorized scooter) INSIDE the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine for the 11th Annual Blessing of the Bikes.
Reverend Thom will say a few kind words and then sprinkle the bikes with Holy Water. There is a moment of silence to remember those cyclists we’ve lost in the past year, a chance for everyone to ring their bicycle bells in celebration of cycling, and we’re gone.
This is a particularly special year -- a large portion of the Cathedral has been closed for years in order to repair the damage from a fire in 2001, and this is the first time since then that we will be back in the Cathedral’s beautiful main section.
All faiths welcome. This is a non-denominational event.
Please note that this event is not organized by the NYC Street Memorial Project. We will be present to read the names of those lost in the past year. For more information about the event, please visit http://theblessingofthebikes.com/.
Louisville Memorial Ride
Louisville
This ride will be a casually paced somber memorial coinciding with the Ghost Bike Memorial Ride taking place in New York. The route will pass by the below locations for an approximate 11 mile loop through the city. The list in no way reflects the actual number of cyclists and pedestrians injured and killed in Louisville every year. Unfortunately we can't be everywhere and the highlands and downtown areas are likely to get the best turnout for riders and provide some of the safer riding conditions in the city as well as containing a higher concentration of incidents involving motor vehicles with bicyclists or pedestrians.
While riding please keep in mind to stay in the group as there is safety in numbers and we will be moving through intersections with clearance in mind, not traffic signals. As always, stay alert

Memorial Celebration of the Life of Andre Anderson
New York City
Come and share in a memorial celebration of the life of Andre F. Anderson, "Dre." The event will be followed by a BBQ at 409 Beach 47th Street. All are welcome to attend.
In 2005, we met the Anderson family as they struggled with the aftermath of their son's death. When it seemed like no one cared that their son had been mowed down by a reckless driver, the biking community rallied around them in support and solidarity. Since then, we have kept in contact with the family as they continue to fight for justice and remember Andre. Every year around the time of his death a bunch of bikers ride out to Far Rockaway and join his family and friends for a memorial celebration of Andre's life. This year we will continue that tradition. Please feel free to join us.
The memorial service will be at the crash site at 1 pm. It will be followed by a BBQ. Andre was a BMX kid and so the family blocks off the street and his friends go bike crazy. It is a down home, Jamaican BBQ to which everyone who attends the memorial is invited.
There will be a casual group ride out to the memorial and BBQ. You can meet the ride at 10:30 am at the George Washington Statue by the Williamsburg Bridge or at 11 am at Bedford Ave & Eastern Parkway (south side).
We need to make the service at 1 pm so please arrive at meet-ups prepared to ride (tires pumped, water bottle filled). Bring tubes, pump, etc. We will ride from the service to the Anderson house. Group rides back tend to be varied, with smaller groups breaking off, and will be wholly dependent on how people are feeling. Most likely a ride will leave Far Rockaway around 4:30 pm.
