Friends and loved ones held a memorial last night for the 34-year-old woman killed when she was struck by a bus.
They gathered outside Top of the World skateboard shop on Rideau St. to remember the life of Melanie Harris.
The group —including her husband Eric Dionne — asked for privacy while they mourned a woman described as a sweetheart and someone who made people feel comfortable because of her disarming personality.
Harris and Dionne tied the knot in Mont Tremblant before friends and family in August 2008. They spent their honeymoon together at Disney World in Orlando.
Harris was killed when she ended up in the path of an STO bus on Sussex Dr., near King Edward Ave., shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Police are asking witnesses to come forward to help investigators determine what led to the fatal crash.
Police said yesterday “for unknown reasons, she found herself in the bus lane.”
Emergency personnel said it appeared she darted in front of the bus, which was empty at the time.
Harris was trapped underneath. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene.
Paramedics transported the 44-year-old bus driver to hospital to be treated for shock. He was uninjured in the collision.
Investigators closed the intersection of King Edward and Sussex for five hours as they recreated the scene of the crash and collected evidence.
Orange pylons lined the road from where the bike path meets Sussex Dr. to where the bus stopped about 25 feet away. Police have not said whether the bus driver will face charges, but did rule out alcohol and speed as contributing factors.
