Leigh Boone was riding to work when she was crushed by a fire ladder truck as a result of it colliding with another fire engine while both were responding to an alarm. Investigators say the driver of the ladder truck ran a stop light, causing the crash and was cited.
She died on April 11, 2009.

According to an article in the Houston Press News:

Although it was the second such ghost bike on the streets of Houston, Leigh Boone's was the most conspicuous, a beacon of remembrance on high-traffic Lower Westheimer. It was recently dismantled by persons unknown.

Leigh had lived in New York for five years, and her NYC friends had a memorial for her on Friday April 24th, 3pm, the Conservatory Gardens (near 105th and 5th Ave).

Hundreds of friends and morners gathered to remember her and raise money at one of Leigh's favorite places, the Poison Girl Bar in Montrose on April 13th.

Friends who knew her personally, as well as
firefighters and other who are just getting to know Boone through this
tragedy, showed up.  They watched a video tribute in her memory, shared stories and signed a ‘ghost’ bike in her honor.

During the memorial, friends sold t-shirts to help raise money for Boone’s medical expenses.  The bar also donated 25% of the drink proceeds to the fund.

“These tragic accidents have a price tag and we’re
trying to help the family get through that,” said Rachel Hewlett,
Boone’s Friend.

According to the website set up in her memory:

Donations are being accepted to help with the costs of the Memorial and
Funeral services as well as starting a fund for interns and volunteers
in the arts. Leigh loved volunteering for both visual and performing
arts and we hope to carry her spirit of giving on.
