Pell Lake — A 13-year-old boy died almost 24 hours after he was struck by a car Sunday at about 12:50 p.m. while riding his bicycle in the area of Hillside Boulevard and Park and Greenview roads.

Troy R. Kozbiel, Pell Lake, was pronounced dead Monday morning at Children's Hospital of Milwaukee because of injuries he received after he was struck by a vehicle driven by 80-year-old Wasyl K. Dobrowoskyj, also of Pell Lake.

Kozbiel was a student at Lake Geneva Middle School, where he also was involved in Destination Imagination.

On Tuesday, Middle School Principal Joe Lynch said he was shocked and saddened by the news of Kozbiel's death.

"You never expect this to happen, even though you know it can," he said. "(Kozbiel) was a good kid, very polite."

According to Lynch, some of the children involved in Destination Imagination met Tuesday to plan something for Kozbiel's family.

On Wednesday, school counselors were available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to talk to students grieving over their loss. Students also had the opportunity at that time to sign a yearbook for Kozbiel's family.

The service for Kozbiel will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of the Haase-Derrick-Lockwood Funeral Home, 800 Park Drive, Lake Geneva.

Although town of Bloomfield police are continuing the investigation, it appears the fatal crash was accidental.

Investigation continues

On Tuesday, Bloomfield Police Investigator Lori Domino said she's not sure when the investigation will be completed.

However, Dobrowoskyj voluntarily submitted a blood sample after the accident.

"Alcohol was not a factor in the crash," Domino said.

According to a police statement, Kozbiel was riding his bicycle north on Park Road, toward Hillside Boulevard.

Dobrowoskyj was driving a silver 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo south on Hillside Boulevard and had negotiated a curve in the road when the accident occurred.

After negotiating the curve, Dobrowoskyj began traveling straight on Greenview Road, approaching Park Road, while Kozbiel was traveling on Park Road toward Hillside Boulevard, where the three roads connect at a Y-intersection.

Domino said the speed limit in that area is 25 mph, and visibility there is "pretty good."

Emergency services responded to the scene. Kozbiel was taken to an area hospital by ambulance, then flown by helicopter to Children's Hospital.

Dobrowoskyj was taken to an area hospital because he complained of shortness of breath and chest pains.

A technical accident reconstruction was completed by the Walworth County Sheriff's Department, which had dispatched Bloomfield police to the scene.
