This ghost bike was removed in December 2010. A photo of it in the trash was posted (#10) on the New York Times Lens Blog.
Franco Scorcia was doing what he loved to do, riding his bike, at around 6 pm on December 6. He turned south onto Broadway from 40th Street, when the driver of a charter bus making the same turn didn't bother to check for cyclists or pedestrians and slammed into him.
The driver of the bus was not charged, though he was given six summonses, according to police.
Franco was born in Italy and drove a cab in New York City for many years. After he retired and sold his cab, he regularly took his bike downtown on the subway from his home in the Bronx to ride around the city. He is survived by his wife, Rosa, several children, and a large extended family.
"My life is empty now...He meant a lot to me. And I have no father anymore." said his son Vito to the Daily News.
When we dedicated a ghost bike to Franco at the crash site on Wednesday, December 12, we shared tears and hugs with several family members and one crash-witness who came to remember him. Fred Askew's photos of the memorial can be viewed here
