From the Tailwind Times (pg. 8)
On Thursday, July 19th, at 9:17 AM, near milepost 369 on Arizona SR89A, at the intersection of Lower Red Rock Loop Road & SR89A, a tragic car vs. bike collision involving our longtime member Pete Bennett, 67, of Cornville claimed his life. Earlier newspaper reports said milepost 367, but this was mistaken.
From http://www.bikeleague.org/action/responding.php
Pete Bennett was killed in a bicycle accident on July 19, 2007, near his home in Arizona. Born July 1, 1943 to Russell and Louise Bennett in Memphis, TN, Russell "Pete" Bennett, Jr. moved to Arizona with his wife and children in 1972. He worked as a computer programmer and systems analyst for American Express in the Phoenix area before retiring and moving to Northern Arizona in 2000. There he lived life to the fullest and died near Sedona while riding his road bicycle, one of the many outdoor passions of this vibrant and physically fit man.
From a memorial website made in his memory:
We are very sad to announce that Pete Bennett was killed in a bicycle accident on July 19, 2007, near his home in Arizona. We are shocked and devastated at his death, and will miss him dearly.
Sincerest thanks go out to all of you who attended Pete’s Celebration of Life ceremony on Saturday, August 4th, in person or in spirit. We so enjoyed hearing stories that made us laugh, cry and remember all the wonderful attributes that made Pete the exceptional man he was.
The first annual ride in Pete’s honor and to promote bicyclists’ and motorists’ safety, “For Pete’s Sake,” was a big success. Approximately 80 riders showed their support and shared memories of Pete on Labor Day, September 3rd. We thank those who were able to ride, those who came to visit, and the business owners who donated T-shirts, banners, refreshments and supplies for the event. Special thanks to Midge for pulling this all together, and the Arizona Coalition of Bicyclists for their invaluable support during this time.
A heartfelt thanks to all those who have made contributions in Pete’s honor. It would have pleased him to know that such a tragic circumstance has helped the charitable organizations he held dear.
