About this site

Ghostbikes.org is intended to be a site for the worldwide cycling community. For information on ghost bike work being done in your area, click one of the cities listed on the right.

This site was initially set up by the NYC Street Memorial Project. We have collected information on many other cities, but for the most part have only had access to media reports. This site reflects our project very well, but much of our information on other places is incomplete. We want to encourage people everywhere to help fill in the blanks on this site and help it grow.

We hope to create a space where those lost on dangerous streets can be remembered by their loved ones, members of their local communities, and others from around the world. We also hope to inspire more people to start installing ghost bikes in their communities and to initiate changes that will make us all safer on the streets.

Participating

If you are interested in helping out with ghostbikes.org, there are a couple of ways to get involved.

  • Content corrections and information submission: If you see an error in the information on the site, or have information on a ghost bike that is not listed, please go to the contact page and fill out the form selecting "Correction / Information contributions" from the category list.
  • Maintaining your local area's section: If you would like to take on the responsibility of maintaining your area's section of ghostbikes.org, please go to the contact page, and fill out the form selecting "Participation in ghostbikes.org". Please tell us where you are from, and what if any connection you have to the ghost bike project in your community, or the cycling community in general.

If we determine that your request is valid, which may include follow up questions via e-mail, we will set you up with an account on our site. You will have the ability to edit and add information about your area. If you are directly involved with the installation or care of ghost bikes, we can also enable a contact form for your project.

You do not need to have any specific technical skills or know HTML to take on this task. It is helpful, though not necessary, if you are generally comfortable with community-driven sites and some basic web concepts. We have tried to simplify the site's interface where possible, and are willing to help folks learn how to maintain their sections.

Any abuse of your access as a city maintainer will result in the immediate suspension of your site privileges. These decisions are open for review, but given the nature of the content on this site, we expect you to be respectful and provide only accurate information.
