Dr. Carl Nacht, a medical director and marathon runner, was killed by an NYPD tow truck that failed to yield as the truck driver turned through the protected West Side Greenway towards the NYPD tow pound. Dr. Nacht had been bicycling along the scenic path with his wife when the crash occurred. "He would travel to elderly patients' homes during lunch or in the evenings on his bicycle," said Donna Malech, a nurse who worked with Nacht for 10 years. "He'd spend about an hour at their homes, examining them and talking with them. He was interested and he was interesting."
In September, 2006, Mary Beth Kelly led the NYC Century Bike Ride in memory of her husband. Since his death, Mary Beth has emerged as an outspoken and eloquent advocate for New York City cyclists.
In August 2008, this ghost bike was attacked , and is now damaged and locked to a nearby fence. We were later contacted by someone that heard it had been smashed by a very angry driver of a black SUV.
